Experience counts

No two video shoots are exactly alike.

We had a San Francisco video production gig the other day, where we were to record a conference. A group from Canada was having their user group meeting there, and they found us to record the video, and edit a promotional piece for their website. Nothing could be simpler, right? After all, we’ve done hundreds of similar events in the past.

Since this was a new venue, we scouted the location on the day prior to the shooting.

And we were glad that we did. The event was being held at the Energy Efficiency Funding Group on Mission St. To our dismay, we discovered that in the hall there was a huge concrete pillar which was standing in the middle of the room. The pillar is an internal part of the building, designed to help make the building earthquake proof (after all, this WAS a San Francisco video production we were doing).

video experience counts

Often we call these shoots “back of the room shoots” because that’s where we typically set up – in the back of the room. But this pillar made the standard configuration impossible. Any professional video producer will tell you this can be a challenging environment to work on but at the end of it all, it’s our job to ensure that the customer gets what she wants. .

Frankly, we had never encountered quite the same situation before, but with our years of experience and flexibility we were able to adapt, pull through the hardships and give the quality that is required.

Having the adaptability and experience allows us to know how to navigate in various environments. Those are the sorts of things that separate an amateur and a professional video producer. It is something that takes years to learn. It takes training, dedication and understanding, all skills that we have acquired and used over the years to deliver the kind of videos that our customers need.

Experience counts!

San Francisco Business Video – Our Specialty

Since getting our start shooting San Francisco business videos through our Bay Area video production company Penrose Productions in 1981, we have been committed to creating high quality, business videos for our clients.

For sales and marketing videos, we emphasize the creation of outstanding videos that present our clients’ products and/or services in a way that gets customers to buy, or at least consider buying, from our clients.

But yet another category of Silicon Valley and San Francisco business video productions that we often do might be considered communications videos. Often these will document the meetings, seminars, proceedings, training, etc. of our clients so that the information can be more widely disseminated. These meetings vary in their interest to us as observers. Of course, the content is not designed to appeal to us, but rather to the client’s target market, whether an internal or external audience.

We consider it a plus when the content is something to which we can actually understand or can relate.

If we can actually apply the content to our own lives or business, that’s a huge plus.

As an example of the opposite, when we shoot high tech training as we so often do with Silicon Valley video productions, we can be totally lost when listening to content about advanced electrical engineering and computer science.

In contrast to this, we were recently shooting a San Francisco business video for a top insurance company’s management meeting at the Ritz-Carlton in San Francisco.  This was our sixth straight year shooting and editing for this company and we find the whole experience a consistently interesting one. The content of the 3-day meeting was not about insurance, but rather sought to promote dialogue with the nearly one hundred management attendees as the company worked on growth strategies to get to the next level of revenue and profitability.

San Francisco training videoAs I listened to the discussions on business development and strategy it took me back to my graduate school days at the University of California.  The work was led by outside consultants from Management Systems of Los Angeles. As the company principals led the group in their work, it was eerily similar to being in the classroom getting my MBA in Berkeley all over again.  I found myself not just overseeing the recording of the event, but I was inspired and renewed in my original vision to provide amazing San Francisco business video production to businesses large and small. Many of the management concepts shared in the meeting were lessons I originally learned at Cal, and it was inspiring to get a “refresher course” on these principles.

The truth is, I often get involved in the day to day operations of running the video production.

But this time it was a treat (and an annual one at that with this client) that allowed me to also hear top-flight consultants and apply their lessons on strategy and tactics to our own company.  It served to re-engergize me and helps me look at the big picture for Penrose Productions.

At Penrose we have a passion to ignite the Bay Area business community with a desire to share and expand their business concepts through San Francisco business videos.  Now more than ever, video is the key to conveying a positive image of your products, services and overall company vision.   The problem is, many businesses still try to “do it themselves” and end up shooting themselves in the foot.  I made a commitment to quality video production back in grad school and that has never changed.  Just as with hiring any expert, videos from a professional Bay Area video production company can help take businesses to the next level.

As I reflect back on the many videos we’ve done through the years, I realize that San Francisco video production has changed a great deal over the years.

Penrose Productions has always remained at the forefront of producing San Francisco business videos in both quality and customer service.

San Francisco Video Production for 2014

Video production moves into 2014.

As we head into the new year of 2014 we reflect on the many changes that we have seen in our 32 years in the video production industry in the San Francisco Bay Area. But even as we look back, we have to focus on what amazing things lie ahead in the New Year.

Through YouTube, Google has become the 800 pound gorilla in video production for businesses of all sizes.

San Francisco video productionWith the importance of video as a search engine ranking tool, the business (regardless of size) that ignores YouTube videos does so at their own peril. Video have the ability to:

  • get you ranked high in the search engines if optimized properly
  • engage your viewers
  • communicate a call to action

For 2014, good videos will be more important than ever to not just attract viewers, but to convert them into buyers.

We’ve seen many videos that get optimized well for certain keywords and show up on page 1 of Google’s search engine results. But what good does it do if the viewer is not motivated to call or come into a business?

Now is the time to create a video marketing strategy that accomplishes ALL of the above functions. Videos need not be expensive to accomplish these goals, but the use of a professional video production company – experts at communicating marketing messages – is a great way to accomplish “all of the above.”

Check out our San Francisco video production samples on our website or give us a call.

And here’s to a great, productive and profitable 2014!

Video Press Releases Increase Views 55%

Video press releases are shown to increase user views in controlled study.

We were intrigued to read recently that video press releases scored a significantly higher viewership that those press releases without videos. The methodology and logic was detailed in a recent Reel SEO article about the video press release comparison.

In it, author Greg Jarboe reports on a test that was run by New Orleans marketing company Get City Dealz. Three press releases were sent out at the same time of day on successive Saturdays last February:

  • with only an embedded video
  • with only an embedded picture
  • without either a picture or video

The test showed that the video press release got 55% more views.

The results were hardly surprising, as we’ve been saying for quite some time (as in this post on BtoB video marketing) that video gives the marketer a strong edge these days, and this obviously holds true for video press releases.

video press releases get results

The video press release test was flawed in it’s approach, however.

As any good marketer or scientist knows, the proper way to test the effect of different variables is to isolate them and change just one at a time to measure their impact. In this study, the results would have been better measured if there had been a couple of more controls:

  • instead of three different press releases, they should have used the SAME press release (instead of 3 different ones), one with video, one with an image, and one without either
  • send all three releases out on the same date, instead of 3 successive weeks.

That said, the measurement of the effect of the response to video press releases would have probably been pretty much the same. However, to make the claim that they are 55% more effective may or may not be true.

Bottom line: you can rest assured that video press releases will get a better response than they would without the video embedded.

Video Marketing Software Leverages YouTube

Video marketing can use extra tools to help leverage the power of YouTube videos.

Video marketing with YouTube can be a great way for companies and organizations to use a free server to store their videos. It’s easy to use, but there are some serious limitations when it comes to your video marketing.

When relying solely on YouTube, video marketing methods are constrained when using the annotations feature. This is a great feature but is completely self-serving for YouTube, as they want us to stay on their site. Thus the links that you can embed in annotations section of your YouTube video will only link within YouTube. They will allow you viewers to go to another YouTube video for example, but you can not use annotations to send your viewers to your order page or your website, for example.

There are now video marketing software tools to send your viewer wherever you would like them to go, and one is even free.

You can use the site at LinkedTube to send your viewers to any url you would like. But you can not do this within YouTube — it works for embedded videos only.

video marketing with LinkedTube

So, if you want to use a YouTube video as a video marketing tool, you can go to their site and input the relevant information to get a free embed code for placing you video within your site. The tool does not offer too much flexibility but you can create the basic embedded links with the tool, and with a little knowledge of html, edit some of the parameters in the code.

An example is below, where we have used the LinkedTube tool to put a link on our short video marketing doodle video to lead viewers to our portfolio (again, you can’t do this within YouTube). The link shows on the video at the top when you hover your mouse on it.

In the rush to aid us in our video marketing efforts, several companies have developed advanced embedding solutions in your videos on a paid basis. These platforms give a wide variety of features that allow entrepreneurs and video marketing experts the ability to embed links to apps, pictures, other videos, calls to action, etc.

BtoB Video Marketing is here to stay

Video marketing belongs in the BtoB space every bit as much as the consumer marketplace.

With over 31 years of helping companies with their video marketing it comes as no surprise to us that surveys now confirm the popularity and use of BtoB video marketing. Web videos have truly helped firmly entrench video marketing productions in this way, but we’ve seen this since the early 1980s.

Our thoughts and recollections of this video marketing history were stirred by the reading of an interesting BtoB marketing survey conducted by Software Advice in January of this year.

In it we see that in a survey of BtoB marketers, over 90% of the respondents said they used videos in the BtoB marketing efforts. And listed as a separate category, “video demos” came in with 70% of the people using them. Presumably this is a subset of the 90% “videos” number.

BtoB video marketing

As we mentioned, this comes as no surprise, as video marketing productions for our clients are the backbone of our business model. We’ve always tried to sell potential clients on the advantages of video:

  • it’s cheaper than having to send a sales rep
  • the consistency of the sales pitch — same story every time
  • video shows every feature and benefit the client thinks is important

We have won national video production awards for our training and communications videos as well, but video marketing programs are our bread and butter.

From the beginning we’ve been producing video marketing tapes, then video marketing DVDs, and now web video marketing programs.

Although some of these are directed to consumers, most are in the BtoB space. In fact we’ve done worldwide video production work for companies that wanted their products or services explained or demonstrated to their clients.

If history holds, in another 10 or 20 years we’ll be looking at a whole new technology for sharing video marketing messages. But regardless of the delivery platform, there will always be the need for professionals to tell a compelling and effective video marketing story.

We hope to be there to share our insights then. Maybe we’ll just publish this blog post with an added paragraph about that new deliver platform…

Small Business YouTube Video Scripting for Search Engine Power

Small business YouTube videos can boost your search engine rankings tremendously, but it all starts with the scripting.

We’ve shared how small business YouTube videos can boost your search engine ranking, due largely to the love that these small business YouTube videos get from Google. After all, the latter owns this online video hosting company.

And Google even admits this themselves as they coach us how to make your YouTube videos more visible in the search engines.

When we post small business YouTube videos to help our quest for greater visibility to potential clients, we want to exploit every factor that we can to improve our odds of being found.

This starts right at the beginning, during pre-production of the small business YouTube video.

Google can not tell the content of our small business YouTube videos from the visual aspects; only through the audio. That is why the audio becomes so important. Theoretically, we could have ugly video throughout the production and Google wouldn’t know the difference. (More about this later.)

Remember that when optimizing your small business YouTube video on the YouTube site, the audio should be included in two areas of your small business YouTube video page:

  • captions
  • description

YouTube and Google search these areas to learn about their content and relevance. So we want to script our audio so that it maximizes our search engine results. This means using your well-chosen keyword phrase properly in the audio portion of the small business YouTube video script.

This can be done in any way that is audible:

  • voice-over narration
  • on camera narration
  • singing the words

Having a nice scenic video with just music and now words will not get you any search engine power from the audio portion of the video small business YouTube production, so you want to include spoken words.

We’ve written before about how to make sure your audio is included in the captions and description of your small business YouTube video. Follow those steps after the video is completed to be sure you get maximum search engine leverage.

small business YouTube video

Now what about ugly video? If the search engines don’t care, should we?

The answer is of course, because getting found more easily in the search engines is only one part of the customer acquisition equation. If we manage to get our small business YouTube video ranked on page one of Google, but it looks bad, customers aren’t going to be interested in giving us a chance at their business.

So quality images are key for your small business YouTube video, but make sure that the audio script follows the rules above.
