Video Marketing Weekly from Penrose Productions 11/7/17

This week the Video Marketing Weekly from Penrose Productions has articles for you.

Free or cheap sources of stock footage and images are the subject of the lead article in thisstock footage week’s Video Marketing Weekly. Video marketers can always use additional sources of stock footage that are copyright cleared, and when they are free or minimal cost that’s the best of both worlds.

The lead article is titled “13 Stock Video, Stock Image, and Stock Audio Resources for Creators and Marketers.”

In the article, the author shares a variety of sources for stock footage that can be exploited, rather used, to enhance video quality. That of course helps build audience interest and gives video marketers a leg up on delivering their message to their intended audience.

The author has uncovered several sources that we were not aware of and intend to use them in future video projects.

Another great free source that we would add is stock photos from Pixabay.

We’ve written previously about the use of stock footage.

For example, we have written before about the importance of being able to spice up your videos with stock footage. Also, we have blogged about the introduction of Pexels (which is referred to in this week’s lead article) videos here,

New Free Stock Footage Source

Free stock footage site just opened for personal and commercial video productions.

As we’ve mentioned in the past, business videos get a real deal if they can use free stock footage rather than pay for a crew to shoot it new. Many times you can practically get away without shooting a specific scene to underscore your point. This cutaway (or B-roll) footage can just convey the “feeling” for what is being said rather than specifically illustrating your point.

Here is an example of one of our videos that includes stock footage:

Rather than shoot any of this footage, the video is created entirely from live action and animated stock footage.

New we see that there is a new company that is giving away stock footage for free. We’ve yet to see what the catch is, so we suggest you take advantage of the source while it is still free. The license information indicates that you can download the footage for free and use it personally or commercially.

pexels videos.jpg

Because the video portion of the site is new, there is not an excess of free stock footage, at least as pertains to video.

However, the site has had free photos available for awhile, and there are lots of free stock photos there.

So use Pexels for stock footage if you find something to your liking — you can’t beat the price. It is free stock footage, after all.

Obstacles to Video Marketing Success

Recently we read about video marketing success in a report that was published in June 2014 entitled “B2B Video Marketing: B2B Benchmarks and Best Practices.”

video marketing success as found in demand metric studyThis report was produced by Demand Metric Research Corporation in partnership with Ascend2, and it was sponsored by VidYard. The report was a study in which 398 marketing sales and business professionals worldwide were polled regarding their use and video marketing successes with B2B videos. And all of the respondents had either used video for BtoB marketing or were planning to.

There were a number of interesting findings in the study.

One included what the respondents felt were the obstacles to video marketing success. We were dismayed (but not surprised) to read that 47% of the people responding to the survey cited a lack of budget for their video has an obstacle. Fully another 45% indicated a lack of in-house resources or a problem.

I suspect strongly that these two categories are both largely the same respondents to the survey.

Creating compelling content was another major factor users said was another obstacle to video marketing success.  To us this merely underscores the fact that many of the people in the B2B marketing world do have an understanding of the need for Media Marketing, but do not have a strong comprehension of what it takes to create a successful video. In the remainder of the study, B2B marketers indicate strong understanding of the process. This indicates that they know how to what to do with the videos once they have been created.  However it did not seem that many of them on grasped what was necessary to create those videos in the first place.

As a professional video production company, our job is to lower those barriers of entry to B2B marketers who realize the need for good strong videos.

Obviously if they do not understand how to get them created efficiently and effectively, they are not going to continue with the video production process. The plain truth of the matter is that many videos are not very expensive to make and instead can be produced at a price that’s returns a great ROI. Many videos such as this one below have in the relatively simple production cycle and do not require extensive (if any) use of video cameras and the recording of video and audio on location or in the studio.

As you can see in this video we have not used a video camera to create the visual images necessary to communicate, yet it is a video marketing success. Instead we use the video editing process to merge graphics, narration and music. We also have the ability to use stock footage in video production as well, also avoiding the need to hire a camera and crew.

The primary challenge begins with the lack of an effective media strategy before beginning the video.

And as it turns out this was the fourth greatest obstacle to video marketing success as defined in the study. In fact 33% of the B2B marketers realize that they lacked an effective strategy. This indicates some awareness of the problem, however a full 26% of the of people who responded suggested that producing studio quality video was also an obstacle to video marketing success as mentioned above. Studio quality video is NOT necessary in order to effectively communicate the message and of course this is particularly important when budgets are limited. So if we may be so humble we would like to suggest that you contact us at Penrose Productions so that we can discuss with you ways in which the video production process can be effective for you and maximize your ROI.  Time after time we have seen that he budgets do not have to be nearly as high as you fear.

Testimonial Videos for Your Business

Testimonial videos can help your company’s bottom line. But they can hurt your business if not done properly.

Testimonial videos can help any business out there wishing to make full use of modern tools to market their business. Video has emerged as one of the most powerful tools for communication in the modern world, and is gaining ground on text-based communication as the preferred mode of sharing information. For a business, a testimonial video is the perfect way to engage with an audience ready to consume information.

testimonial video

To come up with a truly great testimonial video, keep in mind the following:

  • Tell a story. It’s easy to find a loyal customer to endorse the business, saying how great they appreciated the product/service. However, viewers may find it boring. However, storytelling techniques have never failed to capture the interest of the audience. Find a customer that had a unique challenge for which your business provided a solution, and you’ll be able to connect with viewers instantly.
  • Keep it real. Video is the next best thing to a face to face conversation the audience will have with your business. Keep the testimonial real at all times. Modern viewers are quite adept at spotting scripted scenes, so avoid that. Let the characters express themselves in their own words.
  • Cover everything. Sure, the whole point of the testimonial is to convey how great your business is. However, don’t jump straight into the hard sell with the video. Cover the character’s entire journey, from how they discovered the problem at hand, what led them to your business, the problem solving process, and the results.
  • Use a professional video production service. To be able to capture all these aspects in a 2 to 3 minute video, you will require expert video production and editing services. Anyone can hold the camera and record, but it’s a real professional who can identify the touching points of the video that will best convey the message.
  • Keep it short. Concentration spans are slowly reducing. Most viewers will probably have a few minutes to spare to watch the video. Having the testimonial video go on and on for half an hour is bound to go unwatched. Keep the video short and concise; 4 minutes at the most. However, don’t skip over important talking points in an effort to shorten run time.
  • Be sure to promote the video. Share it with your clients and potential clients. The video is worthless if it isn’t seen by your intended audience. This can happen in a variety of ways, and we can help you create the apparatus for these placements if needed. They include:
    1. placing your video on YouTube and maximizing its search engine power
    2. sending links in promotional emails
    3. place the videos in white papers (.pdf’s)
    4. place them on your website
    5. play them at your trade show booth

Using these tips, your next testimonial video should have customers buzzing with excitement regarding your business.

Bay Area Video Production a Hit at Fancy Food Show

A simple Bay Area video production for a new local food packager helps launch them at a huge San Francisco food show.

As a Bay Area video production company, one of the great treats is that we get to produce videos on such a wide variety of topics. We’ve done videos of a tropical hotel, a Welsh wafer fab, a Chinese lead frame manufacturer, at the zoo for an 8th grade science movie, Gold Country supermarket training videos, and so on. The diversity helps keep this business fresh for us.

We were delighted recently to get a call from the folks at Dio Deka Restaurant in Los Gatos CA to help them unveil their new line of Hellenic foods (read Greek-inspired) that they are rolling out to supermarkets and delis.

One of the highlights was getting to dine with the owners at the restaurant and enjoy many of these incredible foods. I know, it’s a tough job but someone has to do it!

Greek food

The big unveiling for their new food line and our Bay Area video production was at the San Francisco Winter Fancy Foods Show at Moscone Center.

Dio Deka had hired an amazing food photographer from Southern California, Brian Leatart to photograph the new foods they were unveiling. From there is was up to us to create a simple edited video production in the Bay Area. The purpose was to have this video play on a large screen at the back of their booth at Moscone while the Dio Deka folks cooked up samples of the food to share with buyers at the show.

From our experience in doing Bay Area video productions used in trade shows all over the world, we know that trade show videos need to compliment rather than dominate the sales efforts at the booth. If a trade show video gets too detailed or technical, the viewer does not remain engaged.

Trade show videos need to attract potential buyers, not sell them.

Because of show rules, audio was not allowed on any videos played in the booths. That’s why we relied heavily on graphics and character generation to let viewers know what they were seeing. I guess you’ll have to imagine what it was like at the show with the buzz of a huge crowd and no music playing on this video.

But apparently the whole experience was a huge success as reported by Zagat.

We’re glad our Bay Area video production could contribute one small piece to the successful show.

Here’s the video:

I know we’ll be celebrating soon with some Dio Deka foods! Yum!

Silicon Valley Video: Another Past Client Calls on Penrose

We’ve recently produced a Silicon Valley video for a client who found us after 20 years.

As we reported earlier this summer, we had a Silicon valley video production client come back to us after not doing video for 20 years. We’re proud to say that it’s happened again.

A couple of weeks ago, lightning struck a second time and we were called upon by a past (and now current) Silicon Valley video production client. The client had moved on to another firm (or two or three) in the meantime and he remembered us.  But this time they were in a rush.

Judging by their past history as our Silicon Valley video production client, they knew who to call.

sillicon valley video shootThe task was to shoot, edit and output the product video in less than a week. This included narration in both English and Mandarin. Despite the tight deadline of a week, we were able to do the complete production within that time frame. Here we are on location at the client’s office.

So you want to know about the product? Sorry, we’re under NDA and the video was delivered for the client on the web and as a DVD. The company has already featured the video in their booth in Chna.

So if you need a video fast, if you need it good and you want someone to keep your company information to themselves, you’ve come to the right place.

Northern California Video Production (and Worldwide): 32 years and counting

Our Northern California video production company celebrates its 32nd anniversary of business video production.

Northern California video production

Northern California video production is a super competitive marketplace, and we’ve been surviving and thriving over the years for 32 years now — officially. We started the business in October 1981. To last that long, we’d like to think that means that we’re doing something right.

There have been lots of changes over the years in our industry and we’ve kept up with them. And one of the ways we keep our enthusiasm for video production is that our clients are so diverse that we always get involved with a wide variety of industries and locations.

Repeat business is the key.

Although we’re constantly on the prowl for new business, bringing customers BACK to Penrose Productions has been the key to a long career in Northern California video production. The technology has hanged dramatically since 1981 (can you say VHS and Betamax?) but two things remain constant: offering quality video work and backing it with dedicated customer service.  As a result we have a long list of Northern California video production testimonials for your review.

Our guarantee is unique among Northern California video production companies.

You can search far and wide and you won’t be able to find any other guaranteed Northern California video production. We offers a complete 100% money-back guarantee. But we’ve never had to refund anyone’s money under this policy. Why? Because it forces us to work closely with our clients to be sure that they are happy with the progress of the project every step of the way.

Customers have trusted us to take our Northern California video production skills across the US and around the globe.

windsor castle video production

On many occasions customers have used us to shoot not just Northern California video productions. They’ve also hired us to shoot at locations throughout the country and even globally. We’ve shot in 25 states and D.C., as well as numerous foreign countries. These customers know that the video footage we capture will be consistent with the overall theme and look of the video project we are doing for them.

We offer all video production services, from concept to delivery.

We’ve had to change with technology over the years, but as the dean of Northern California video production companies we’ve added a variety of services to our offerings over the years, What was once recording to video cassettes and editing from tape to tape is now done digitally. And while viewers once had to load up the VCR to watch a video, they now just pop in a DVD, or click a mouse to watch on the internet or a company intranet.

We’re offering a 32% discount for new business, good until Thanksgiving 2013.

In honor of our 32nd anniversary as the premier Northern California video production company for BtoB videos, we’re offering a 32% discount to new clients on all work booked by November 27, 2013. We’d love to make some new friends that will call on us for the next 32 years!

Stock Footage for Business Videos

Sock footage can give a great bang for the buck to business videos.

Business video productions can range widely in price from hundreds to hundreds of thousands of dollars. For the hard-pressed small business, video is a tool that should be employed, but the dilemma is how to keep the price at the lower end of the range. Stock footage can help immensely.

business video stock footage

Stock business video footage can be a cost effective way to enhance your video.

Stock footage is a resource that is growing in use, and it can vary in quality widely. The cost for this stock business video footage varies as well. You rarely want to use stock footage exclusively, as it’s usually best to include footage of the actual company facilities and stakeholders in a business video production.

But it can be done.

We recently created a quick little business video promo for Penrose Productions which was 100% stock footage, plus stills from our past shoots.

Regardless of the message, stock video footage can be much cheaper than hiring a crew to get essentially the same shots. We’ll gladly consult our many stock footage resources to aid in your next business video.

From there, the editing of this stock footage will be the key to creating a terrific and impactful business video production.

Silicon Valley Video Editing System Working to Save Trees

State-of-the-art Silicon Valley video editing system being used to help save the rain forest.

Through our 31+ years of doing Silicon Valley video editing and production, we’ve come to truly appreciate the broad diversity of projects that we’ve been a part of. We’ve traveled extensively to conduct many of these video shoots and done worldwide video production for many clients.

Projects have ranged from a round the world video production trip for a semiconductor manufacturer, to a Maui video production of a hotel there, to several US nationwide video productions for the folks at CityPass.

silicon valley video editing client Katherine HoldenThis time we won’t be hitting the road, however. The work that we’re going to do is confined to the post production portion of footage already shot in the Amazon rain forest.

We’ve just finished the installation of our new AVID video editing system and the first project is to assist local resident Katherine Holden in her quest to save the rain forests. What makes Katherine unique is that she is a 71 year old woman who is learning to climb huge trees in the rain forests in order to bring consciousness to their dwindling habitat.

Katherine is an amazing woman and she tells us that she has had a love of climbing trees ever since she was a little girl. By her own admission that was more than a few years ago, so to see a woman all rigged up and climbing trees at age 71 is truly an inspiration.

Katherine has already posted several videos of her adventures, and you can see them here on Katherine’s YouTube channel. One particularly interesting short video is a time-lapse of her rigging a bed for sleeping in a tree:

The finished videos we edit in our Silicon Valley video editing facilities will be used in presentations Katherine uses to share her work with the world and to draw attention to the environmental issues in the rain forests.

BTW, Katherine came to us by way of Thumbtack — so glad she did!

New AVID Editing System Added for San Francisco Bay Area Video Clients

AVID editing is still the standard for San Francisco Bay Area video editing and throughout the US.

In the San Francisco Bay Area video editing community and throughout the country, AVID edit systems are acknowledged as the standard of the industry. It becomes even more evident as you travel throughout the nation (especially the L.A. production community) that AVID is not just the San Francisco Bay Area video standard, but the national standard as well.

We’ve used AVID edit systems since we made the switch to non-linear editing in the 1990s and ever since then we’ve relied on their products. That’s why it was a no-brainer to add another AVID system to handle our expanding work load.

Our growth is coming in two areas:

  • legacy business (sales, marketing, training, and communication videos for businesses)
  • small business videos (primarily to gain greater search engine visibility).

Because of these expanding areas, we needed to add more edit capacity. While we have never limited ourselves to only doing San Francisco Bay Area video productions, the need is greatest for that geographical region. We look forward to putting it to use for those in other areas of the country (and even the world) as well.

We’re finding that as businesses seek higher search engine rankings through video, they realize that the video is important not just for SEO rankings, but to get customers in the door. So to accomplish this the smart companies wnat a truly professional look. Our new AVID system will contribute to doing that for our clients. And as we’ve pointed out previously, when our web videos are uploaded, we don’t want the clients to feel the need to do any YouTube video editing of their program.
